With Earth Day coming up it’s a good chance to teach your kids about green living. This activity pack will teach your kids what Earth Day is, why we celebrate it and what we can do to help the Earth. The 8 page packet not only teaches these concepts but also includes some fun activities as well.

lunchable waste

Reduce

Explain to your kids that one of the best things we can do for the earth is to buy products that have less packaging so that we reduce the amount of waste we create in the first place.

When I was in elementary school we had a speaker come in who showed us the amount of packaging in a Lunchable compared to making your own Lunchable at home. Twenty plus years later I still remember the presentation.  So I figure it must have been a pretty effective lesson.

Weigh the amount of food in both a pre-bought lunch and one made at home. Also weigh the amount of waste created.

Your kids will discover that the home made lunch not only has more food and less waste, but taste better too.

reusable and disposable diapers

Reuse

Talk about how some products are easier to reuse then others. Take a look at several single use items and reusable items and decided which would be better for the environment.

We also thought of different ways we could reuse some of the products in our home.

recyclables

Recycle

After talking about what items can and can not be recycled. Test your children’s new knowledge by giving them a pile of trash and having them sort it into two piles. They will be sure to have a lot of fun figuring out what can be recycled . My kids were surprised to see that the majority of the objects we had could be.

Renew

Discuss how you can’t just take from the earth and not give back. We started growing some flowers inside our home to plant outside when the weather gets nice. The kids also wrote down some pledges for our family to increase our sustainability this year.

My kids learned a ton and have a new out look on how they can help our planet. This would make a great educational lesson for any group of children. If you would like to use a copy of the Earth Day Packet feel free to download a copy below. Enjoy!

Hello, I was trying to download and print to use as some remote learning during this time. However I am unable to print the packet. It is printing as 20 pages of jumbled letters. Is there a different way to get the download. Thanks
